Welsh International defender Ashley Williams said he was shocked and disappointed after being dropped for last Saturday’s home game against Leicester City.

The defender played every minute in the League last season in the Championship and usually he’s one of the first names on the teamsheet.

However, with Paulo Sousa now in charge nobody’s place in the first team is certain and with captain Garry Monk now back after injury, Williams will have to work hard to win his place back.

Sousa’s decision didn’t cost his side as they went on to beat Leicester City 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium. Williams did play some part, coming on as a second half substitute.

He told the Evening Post:

‘I played every minute last year and I wanted to try to do the same this season,’

‘I guess it was never going to happen, that I was going to have to come out of the team at some point.

‘But it was a shock because I’ve played every game in the league for a long time.

‘The gaffer explained his reasons to me the day before the game.

‘They should stay between me and him, but I said fair enough. He is the manager and he has to pick the team he thinks is best for that game.

‘He felt that was the right team, and the main thing is that we won.’
