Swansea City are thought to be favourites to sign a left back on a free transfer this Summer

Swansea City are thought to be favourites to sign left back Christian Fuchs on a free transfer this Summer.

The 29 year-old Schalke full back is out of contract at the end of the season, and according to sources in his native Austria, his representatives are negotiating with the Swans ahead of a possible free switch.

The Swans have also been linked with French full back Franck Tabanou, as well as Marseille striker Andre Ayew who is also available on a free this Summer.

A striker and a left back both appear to be priority in terms of Summer strengthening for Garry Monk as he is in great need of backup and competition for Neil Taylor and Bafetimbi Gomis.

With Taylor suspended for two games and Gomis sidelined with a hamstring injury, it has exposed Swansea’s lack of strength in depth in those positions.

SWANSEA City have been touted as favourites to land Austria captain Christian Fuchs as Garry Monk’s summer transfer plans start to take shape.

Left-back Fuchs starred for current club Schalke against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu only last month, yet he is tipped to move on when his contract expires at the end of the season.

And reports in his homeland claim the 29-year-old’s representative is currently negotiating with Swansea ahead of a probable free transfer switch to the Liberty.

Monk has made no secret of his desire to sign a left-sided defender to replace Ben Davies, who left for Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

The Swansea boss made a bid for Norwich’s Martin Olsson during the January transfer window but the two clubs were unable to agree a fee.

He has also shown interest in French duo Franck Tabanou and Timothee Kolodziejczak, but Fuchs is a new name on the Swansea radar.

There are suggestions that Schalke could offer the player a new deal come the end of the season. But Fuchs, who has more than 60 Austria caps, is already free to talk to other clubs as the end of his contract approaches.

Fuchs has scored three goals and has five assists in 30 appearances this season for Schalke. He also has Champions’ League experience this year and he could be a valuable and experienced player to add to the squad for the 2015/16 season.
