Roberto Martinez’s Spanish raids have caused a stir in some circles but Swansea City captain Garry Monk has given his full backing of the Spaniards transfer approach.
Taking the Spanish contingency up to 5 have been the signings of Jordi Gomez and Gorka Pintado with fees amounting to £300,000 for the duo, Martinez has come under criticism for raiding his homeland instead of investing in home grown talent in the United Kingdom
From the outset of Martinez’s tenure at the club there was a new approach to the way the Liberty Stadium club conducted business. Believing the transfer market in Britain is hugely inflated Martinez has refused to cave into selling clubs demands over player prices.However with new challenges afoot this summer the club have spent in the region of £700,000 on three new signings alone and with 4-5 new players expected, Swansea could forseeability pay in the region of £1.5- £2 million in player transfer fees alone.
That figure has not prevented Garry Monk from giving his full backing to his manager. The former Southampton defender has praised Martinez for his shrewd dealings in the transfer market but has sent out a warning to the new batch of recruits to the championship fight, that they will have very little time to settle in a division that is highly competitive.
Monk Told The WM:
| “That`s the way Roberto has liked to do things and with his experience and knowledge of the game abroad it makes perfect sense.He obviously feels the prices can be a bit high for certain players in Britain, but when he knows the Spanish game inside out, he feels that`s the way forward for us.And he`s shown with his track record that you can place a lot of faith in that.” A lot can be made of having too many foreigners in the team, but it`s never been a problem for us. The players have come in and done a job for the club and been of a very good quality There’s probably a bit more pressure on the lads coming over this season because there won`t be as much time to settle into the game here as there was in League One.” But Roberto has shown everyone how shrewd he is and he wouldn`t have been interested in these players if he didn`t think they could fit straight into the team and improve us. The fact remains that it doesn`t matter where the players come from, if they can do that then that`s all that matters. You hear the same old things about how foreign players don`t like it in the wet and the winter, but that was never a problem for us last year – no-one could afford to think like that because of the fight for places and the manager showing he was never afraid to throw someone in. None of them have come here for an easy life or for a pay packet. Like all of us next season, they want to prove a point and they want to succeed.” But there is already quality through the side and adding to that is only good for us going into the new season.” |
Existing season ticket holders have until close of business on the 14th June to retain their seats for next season.
