Alfie Mawson shared his thoughts after England’s under-21 European Championship semi-final defeat on penalties to Germany.

It was the same old story for England, as they suffered another penalty shoot-out loss, having done well to take a talented Germany side through to penalties after finishing 2-2.

Expected Chelsea loan signing, Tammy Abraham scored to make it 2-1 to England before Germany equalised, but the striker missed his shoot-out spot kick. That miss came straight after Germany’s first miss, before Redmond saw his effort saved to confirm the result.

Mawson was obviously gutted with the result but admitted Germany were the better side and deserved the win:

‘They’re gutted and you can understand why but without them we probably wouldn’t even be at this tournament to be honest,’

‘The goals through qualifying through the group stages and their performances have been fantastic.

‘They’ve got to hold their head high, they’ve been fantastic throughout the qualifying and the campaign.

‘We will learn from this, Tammy I think has another possible two more experiences. He will take these experiences and make sure it won’t happen again.’

‘We are genuinely gutted which I think shows how much it meant to us.

‘It’s one of those things, you’ve got to man up and deal with it, I think tonight they were the better team.

‘I think we did brilliantly well to hang in there, they should have had a few more goals.

‘Credit to us, we kept going, kept going. Penalty shootouts are pot-luck, fair play to them and we will see how they get on in the final.’

Hopefully Tammy Abraham’s season-long loan signing will soon be confirmed. The Mirror reported that the move was agreed, but we’ve yet to see anything officially confirmed. Dutch side Vitesse’s boss confirmed earlier this week that the striker will join us, as he revealed that they lost out in their attempts to sign the youngster.
