Everton manager Roberto Martinez felt that the scoreline didn’t reflect the game as his side lost 3-0 at Swansea City in the Capital One Cup 3rd round.

Instead, the Spaniard said that the scoreline reflected that the home side took their chances, while his team squandered theirs.

He makes a valid point, Everton had decent spells of possession and limited the Swans to very few chances in the first half. Monk had Jefferson Montero to thank to create the opening goal, dancing through 3 defenders before picking out Dyer at the far post who sidefooted the ball home from close range.

Swansea City were defensively sound in the second half, kept a good shape throughout the 45 minutes after the break and didn’t allow the Toffees a way back into the game. Substitute Lukaku was kept very quiet thanks to the quality of defender Federico Fernandez, and Swansea took their chances to add to their lead. The second goal was courtesy of a poor header from a cross that allowed Sigurdsson to slide the ball in, before substitute Marvin Emnes fired home a third from 20 yards just seconds after coming on.

Numerous shots from the visitors flew over the bar, while good crosses couldn’t be converted in the first half as Everton lacked a real presence up front, despite playing some football and getting the ball into wide areas on numerous occasions.

Martinez said:

“It`s a game that came down to whoever took their chances, and Swansea took theirs.

“They were very clinical and I thought they deserved to go through, although 3-0 is not a reflection of the game.

‘The scoreline reflects the team that took the chances. During long spells, we stopped Swansea from playing. It was an important game for us – for players who haven’t played many minutes and to see where they are.

‘If you analyse the chances Swansea had, they were few and far between. We had two or three very good situations. In many aspects, I was fairly pleased with that.’
