There is growing speculation suggesting that Michu is close to making a move to West Ham United, for just £6m.
I would never usually give a horrible tabloid like the Sun the time of day, but the speculation is growing and growing, and the newspaper believe talks of a move have reached ‘boardroom level’.
There was a lot of negative rumours going around following the sacking of former manager Michael Laudrup in February 2014. Most of them suggesting that the Spaniard – also our top scorer in 2012/13, was refusing to play again for the Swans – and that he had already played his last game for the club.
Those rumours of course proved to be wrong, as he featured in five games following Laudrup’s departure, but he struggled to look anything like the goalscorer he was the season before.
Other rumours weren’t quite so cynical, but suggested he had indeed played his final game – but for different reasons.
Michu had a lot of trouble with his ankles last season, which limited him to scoring just 6 goals – compared to 22 the year before. According to rumours, Michu’s ankles are showing no signs of healing which could prevent him from ever getting back to the level he was just a short time ago.
However, even if those rumours were accurate, Swansea City have proved with former midfielder Ferrie Bodde, that they aren’t the type of club to lose belief in a player in such a short space of time – even if they’ve got a career-threatening injury.
They are just rumours after all, and while you always have to take them with a pinch of salt, usually when there is this much speculation and gossip, it tends to suggest that the outcome isn’t good. Are Swansea selling prepared to listen to offers due to his troublesome ankles, or is there more to it than that?
We’d all love to see Michu back 100% fit and committed to the cause, and while manager Garry Monk has stressed that that is the priority, you get the feeling that he may never return to scoring 20+ goals in a season with us.
But to sell for just £6m? It just doesn’t sound realistic.
