This Week’s Carvalhal Analogy Is About Police Academy

Carlos Carvalhal admitted a third FA Cup replay was the ‘last thing they wanted’ after failing to beat Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Swansea City just didn’t do enough to get that crucial goal to put them into the quarter-finals, as Carvalhal’s previous club were worthy of a replay.

The Championship side were the better and more dominant side in the first half, as the Swans finally got going after the half-hour mark. van der Hoorn came closest to scoring in the whole game but his headed effort from Naughton’s cross forced a superb reaction save from the goalkeeper.

The Swans dominated possession after the break, but it was very much the type of football we saw under Clement, neat, tidy and comfortable in the middle third, but lacking creativity and ideas of how to penetrate through and get in behind the opposition back line.

Jordan Ayew came on and looked lively when he first came on but he soon went quiet as we simply couldn’t get past Wednesday’s deep defensive block.

It’s our third FA Cup tie and now our third replay, and while it’s a positive to still be in the competition, it won’t help us in our battle against Premier League relegation.

Carvalhal said:

“But it is not negative, we still have a chance to go to the next round.

“We are playing as underdogs in this competition even if we are playing teams not in the top division, because the Premier League is our priority, but my players are competitive and want to win.

“This was difficult, Wednesday pressed us and made problems, we made changes but we have to give them credit.

“We controlled the ball better after 25 minutes and in the second half we had more control, were more offensive, we had good situations, we blocked their counter attack.

“I think the result is fair and now we go to Police Academy 2.”
