Swansea City will be delighted to receive the news that Wayne Routledge’s red card at QPR on New Year’s Day has been rescinded.

It’s the second time the club have had a red card rescinded after Federico Fernandez’s sending off at Liverpool in the Capital One Cup was ruled out.

The standard of refereeing in the Premier League has reached an all-time low this season with huge, costly errors being made week in week out, and it’s not just Swansea City on the receiving end.

Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson, along with Swansea manager Garry Monk as well as a few others all believe that the English game is in much need of additional video technology assistance to help avoid these awful decisions being made.

QPR were very lucky to still have 11 men on the field by half time after goalkeeper Robert Green clearly handled the ball ‘half a metre’ outside the box according to Monk, and he’s not far off with his estimate there.

Then, with 4 minutes to play, Karl Henry goes in with a high, hard challenge on Wayne Routledge and the winger was clearly frustrated with the dangerous tackle. He barely touches him with the smallest of movements with his right foot near his back, but the assistant referee thinks he’s done enough to deserve his marching orders.

Only on Monday was there controversy again involving referees, as the official failed to spot Jonjo Shelvey or Raheem Sterling’s contact on their respective targets, yet Shelvey was given a retrospective 4-match ban while Sterling was let off – even though he slaps Fernandez inches away from the referee’s assistant.

It’s becoming a farce, the red card has been rightfully rescinded but the Swans can’t afford for these awful decisions to keep happening in games.
