Newcastle United’s Danny Simpson says the team’s attitude and self belief is the reason why they’re top of the Championship table.

The Magpies right back, who played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Liberty Stadium said the team never gave up and they were ‘rewarded’ for that attitude by netting a late equaliser to claim an undeserved point.

He said the draw has lifted the dressing room, but they should really be concerned by a lacklustre performance, having been outplayed by a confident Swansea City side, plus an earlier 3-0 defeat on Tuesday away at Derby County.

Newcastle United were surprisingly poor on Saturday, and lacked most of the qualities you’d expect from the league leaders, and a club with a long Premiership history. Our defence had few problems during the game but a lack of concentration at the end cost us 2 points.

Simpson said:

‘That’s just us isn’t it – we never give in and always keep going until the end,’

‘In the end I think the draw was reward for that attitude and we’ve shown that all season – that’s why we’re top.

‘The point has lifted us and the dressing room was up after the game.

‘In the back of your mind you’re thinking is this the second defeat in a row?

‘We really didn’t want that to be the case so it was a relief to get the equaliser.

‘It was a difficult game and we had to be well organised at the back.

‘We were hoping for one chance and if you want it to fall to anyone in the air then it’s big Andy.

‘He not only wins them nine times out ten he’s also clinical and it was a great header from a great cross by Leon Best.’
