Chelsea have failed in their attempts to get Thibaut Courtois`s red card overturned.

The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card for fouling Swansea City striker Bafetimbi Gomis during Saturday`s thrilling 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium. The Frenchman converted the resulting penalty to help his side take a share of the points.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho refused to give his thoughts on the referee`s decision to send Courtois off after the game, but clearly he didn`t agree. Either that or he`s appealed in the slim hope that his first choice shot stopper won`t miss their vital clash with Manchester City.

But lets be honest, he was never going to be successful in his appeal. He was the last man, he made no contact with the ball whatsoever and denied Gomis an open goal chance to score. Sky Sports pundits Thierry Henry and Jamie Redknapp both disagreed that it was a sending off, claiming Cahill would be able to get back in time as cover. However, on Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher disagreed with his colleagues – and rightly so in our view.

It was also surprising to read former referee Mark Halsey`s comments that the Premier League champions SHOULD appeal the red card.
