Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini praised Swansea City after his narrowly beat them 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon.

Pellegrini is one of those few managers who tends to show respect for the opposition, while many would simply reflect on their own side after what was a good performance from the home side today.

They were worthy of their win, having dominated long spells of possession, but nevertheless, the Swans made it far from easy from the title holders, and they should have dented their title hopes and scored an equaliser late on when substitute Bafetimbi Gomis had a clear chance in front of close but put a shot well wide from just in front of goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Manchester City produced some excellent passing, attacking football in and around the box at times but the Swansea defence made some excellent last ditch tackles to keep them within a goal of the hosts after Bony’s opener was cancelled out by Jovetic and then Toure.

Pellegrini said after the game:

“We played very well. We started 1-0 behind but we had the trust to keep playing, we had a lot of chances and finally we won this game against a very good team that did well today.

“It was important result for us in the Premier League first of all, we have a busy period and we need as many points as we can, but always better for teams to go into Champions League especially against a side like Bayern Munich having won a game.

“If we had scored the third goal maybe the last five minutes would have been easier, they had chances but for different reasons we didn’t have the last pass and the keeper made some very important saves.

“We are working every day to improve our defending, I hope Tuesday we don’t make the mistakes we did today.”
