Who would have believed it? We are approaching the tenth game of the season, the time where most managers see this stage as a better outlook of the league and the other 23 teams within it and we are league leaders!
I honestly thought that we’d be around mid table by now, with a fews wins under our belt. However, we are top of League One but we cannot get too carried away too early as there’s a long way to go yet. We’re not even a quarter of the way through this season and there’ll be up and downs along the way. Last season, we occupied the top place in League Two for months but a bad run late on meant a win at Bury on the very last day was a must if we were finally going to get out of the basement division.
One of the major talking points during the pre-season period was the lack of signings but the squad has improved massively. The likes of McLeod, Britton and Tate are more involved now and its great to see Martinez dominating the midfield. We’ve seen glimpses of play that we haven’t seen from our skipper since his first season with us 2 years ago.
Lee Trundle is still scoring and is averaging a goal a game I think while some of his critics thought he wouldn’t hack it at a higher level. His lack of variety of his penalty positioning has been a big talking point lately. Betting on where Lee will place his penalty would be easy at the moment – bottom left with plenty of power! Despite him saying he’ll have to try out different penalties, he still did the same last weekend, and missed. I don’t think we should change our penalty taker as Lee has the confidence and the ability to score a huge amount more than he misses from the spot.
The fans are pouring into the New Stadium and already we have a full house tomorrow against former European Champions, Nottingham Forest. A crowd of more than 18,000 is expected as Jackett’s men aim to maitain their impressive start to the season.
Meanwhile, Huw Jenkins continues to talk to the press and this time he’s said he wants a top 10 Championship place within 2 years. Now I don’t mind the ambition from our chairman but this is ahuge ask for Jackett. Firstly because Kenny is new into independant management and needs to build the team to a recognised League One side. I think promotion to the Championship needs to come at the right moment, it’s not much good us getting promoted and because of a weak side, we get relegated. We can build a strong side in the next year or two and by then we should be in the Championship. But how Jenkins can expect us to be within the top 10 I don’t know.
Some of us may be expecting back to back promotions after such an excellent start but i think the play offs would be a great achievement this season. Injuries and suspensions will come in to play like they did last term and we won’t be able to strengthen until next year when the transfer window opens in January.
