No Way Jose! Mourinho Says Swansea Created Nothing vs 11 Men

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho lacked class and respect towards a Swansea City side who were more than worthy of their point at Stamford Bridge.

It was far from an opening day that Chelsea expected, as they look to successfully defend their Premier League title this year.

Having scored 9 goals against the Swans last term, they probably invited the prospect of facing Garry Monk’s side on the opening day. With striker Diego Costa fit to start too, they were confident of yet another routine win over the Welshmen.

But Swansea City weren`t going to Stamford Bridge just looking to defend and try and take 1 chance on the counter attack – like they did to beat Arsenal last season, they fielded an attacking side and looked to give Chelsea a good game. And they certainly did.

Jose Mourinho was clearly frustrated to see his side struggle to cope with a Swansea side that looked to have improved further following last year`s successful 8th placed finish.

They played with good attacking flair, pace and quick passing and Gomis had chances to put his side in front, before the hosts took the lead thanks to a stroke of luck, as Oscar`s free kick from wide went all the way into the net.

Ayew scored on his debut to make it 1-1 before Chelsea re-took the lead again, thanks to an even bigger stroke of luck, as Willian`s cross deflected off Fernandez – over Fabianski`s head and into the net.

Fabianski had little to do up until Hazard finally got a chance from a close range, but his powerful shot struck the goalkeeper in the face.

It`s baffling then how Mourinho claimed that the Swans “didn`t have chances” before the sending off.

And his side did?

But the fact is, Swansea did have chances. Both Gomis and Ki forced Courtois into parried saves, and of course – not to mention the goal that they actually created themselves from open play.

The Chelsea boss told BBC Sport:

‘Swansea didn’t have chances against 11 men. The team was playing very, very well in the first half.

‘In one minute, it was a penalty, red card and the goal.

‘If you have 10 men and are winning you can defend well and try to find a strategy but to play with 10 men and try to win the game is more difficult. I would say we were the best team with 11 players and with 10 we fought hard, some fighting at the limit of their condition.’

You get the feeling that Mourinho is trying to keep confidence levels high amongst his players with these statements, otherwise it`s just baffling. Not a word of compliment for the opposition who were worthy of at least a point, and they probably should have punished Chelsea and taken all three.

An impressive stat shows that Swansea`s 10 shots on target is the highest achieved at Chelsea since 2003 – when Opta began to record statistics.
