Monk Set For the Sack? Surely Not!?

The Daily Mirror are running with a story that Garry Monk is set to be sacked and they’ve said a few reasons as to why…

Despite a record-breaking Premier League season last year, as the Swans finished 8th in Garry Monk’s first full season in charge, the rookie boss is struggling now as his side have only won 1 game in 9, losing 5 of the last 8 games.

You can read the Mirror’s story in question here

That run of 8 games is only a point better than Michael Laudrup’s last 8 games before he got sacked – his predecessor.

When the Daily Mirror also published a story that Garry Monk had failed to turn up to training, which was later removed by the newspaper so we can’t link you to that story, it’s hard to believe that there’s much truth in these latest claims by the tabloid.

Having said that, whilst I believe that the club won’t sack Garry Monk – not anytime soon anyway, you can understand and believe some of the reasons they’ve stated as to why the relationship between Monk and the board has somewhat deteriorated.

The Mirror claim that Monk refused the board’s idea of appointing a more experienced coach to support him, with a Direct of Football role also being mentioned.

The board also want to overhaul the coaching setup due to a lack of experience in this department – that’s according to the Mirror, but we at Vital Swansea just cannot believe that they are considering sacking him.

It’s just not the thing we do so early in a season. Yes we sacked Laudrup, but there were plenty of reasons off the pitch why that was a decision that they had to make.

Monk is owed more time at least by the club and we fully expect him to get it. A win in a fortnight at home against Bournemouth and the sacking rumours will hide away, but will inevitably soon return when we lose again.

Chairman Huw Jenkins has been very quiet in recent months about on-the-pitch matters, and you have to wonder if this sort of thing will attract him to come out with a comment denying the rumours? Surely he has to if these reports are totally false? He’ll have to declare his support for the manager?

What do you think? Are they right? Will Monk get sacked? Or is yet another exaggerated story with a number of false claims? Our money is on the latter…
