Roberto Martinez must start considering a change of formation now as 4-5-1 is still yet to prove effective in terms of our attacking play and scoring goals.
We`ve only averaged 1 goal per game this season and at the moment that doesn`t look like improving any time soon.
What concerns us, the fans, is that the Swansea boss is not a fan of 4-4-2, which most of us believe is the system he should now adopt. He`s confident the goals will come from the current 4-5-1 setup but we`re nowhere near as patient as he is.
Martinez recently told the Evening Post that not many teams use 4-4-2 and those that do are rarely successful on a weekly basis. He also added how he has never in his 18-month reign as Swansea manager, used 4-4-2.
His comments were rather confusing. ‘I have never played two up front,’
‘Because we have two strikers on the pitch, people assume we are playing two up front.
‘But that’s like having Dennis Lawrence up front and someone saying we are playing with three centre-backs.
‘No player has a label at Swansea City ? every one of them has many jobs because of the way we play.
‘Anyone who follows us knows we adapt things and change things round.
‘In modern football, there are not many teams playing 4-4-2 who are successful on a weekly basis.’
Whether or not he is playing 2 up front, it`s becoming obvious we need 2 strikers on the pitch.
At the moment, 4-5-1 has seen a regular pattern in our game. A 60-65 minute period of usual dominance in possession but little end product and possibly a goal conceded. Changes would then be made which would see a vast improvement and we always wonder why we don`t play like this from the start? Pintado`s impact in a 4-4-2 usually brings the goal we need but why waste 2 thirds of every game?
Jason Scotland is receiving a lot of criticism from the fans for his lack of contribution this year but Pintado is finding it equally as difficult in leading the attack on his own. The Spaniard was handed his first League start yesterday at home to Burnley but he too was ineffective.
Is Roberto playing too conservative? Trying to limit the amount of goal opportunities the opposition get by dominating the middle third area and trying to get a 1-0 win? Our way of playing hasn`t altered from game one and soon teams in this League will work us out very easily as we become far too predictable.
