Roberto Martinez has issued a 48-hour deadline on the out of contract players at the club.

Izzy Iriekpen, Garry Monk, Bayo Akinfenwa and Kristian O’Leary have until Tuesday to accept their contracts. If no agreement can be found then the offers will be revoked and the concerned players will be released from the club.

Swansea City Manager Roberto Martinez talked to the Western Mail on the 48-hour deadline:

‘”The better they play, the better contracts they will earn and the more successful they are on the pitch more rewards they get.

There are many players here who can play a big part in my team and in time get their own rewards with their contracts and the dreams they want to achieve here.

It`s something me and the board have talked about and we feel it is the right way ahead.

Swansea City are in League One but everything is geared up to improve and be in a higher division and every single player here should realise that aim – the contract issue reflects that as well.’

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins stated this week that he felt there would be mixed news over the out of contract players. This matter will come to a close next week and this will allow Martinez to gain a better picture of what positions need to be added too.

It is good that performance related contracts now seem to be in place, this will undoubtedly raise the performance levels at the club. Players will now have to work for their contracts, for far too long some players performances have been bellow par.

Next week should be a very interesting one.
