Swansea City head coach Paul Clement insists that Roque Mesa is still in his plans despite leaving him out of the matchday squad that beat Huddersfield Town.

The Spanish midfielder was a surprise omission for Saturday’s first home win of the season against the Terriers, as Clement welcomed back Ki Sung Yueng to the bench, while there was also a spot for Sam Clucas as Leon Britton kept his place in the starting line-up.

Despite making a costly passing error in the 2-1 home defeat against Watford, he came on at the start of the second half and was one of our best performers. He also impressed in the cup win at Reading, so you can’t help but feel that his absence is a harsh and questionable decision from the boss.

Clement gave his reasons though, and said:

“I left Roque out because I felt this was the best line-up for this game, but he is very much part of the plans for this club moving forward,”

Talking about welcoming back Ki and Dyer, who both came on as a second half subs, Clement added:

“We got Ki back after a while out and we got Nathan back after an even longer lay-off, so that`s good to see,”

“That`s why you build a squad, so that even if you have injuries, you have other players who can come in and compete at this level.”

It’s a harsh decision on Mesa even more so because neither Clucas or Ki has done anything special whatsoever in a Swansea shirt recently. Clucas has looked error-prone while Ki’s commitment and consistency keeps coming into question every season.
