Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup has confirmed that captain Ashley Williams won’t feature in Saturday’s home game against Sunderland.
Despite being on the bench two weeks ago in the 2-0 defeat at Southampton, the Welsh international, having missed the recent World Cup qualifying matches, will not face Sunderland this weekend.
An ankle injury has meant that Williams has only managed around 30 minutes training in the last four weeks, but the good news is that he’s expected to step up his training next week.
Manager Michael Laudrup said that Williams could return for the Europa League game on Thursday or Sunday’s match against West Ham:
Ashley was on the bench at Southampton and he could maybe have played for ten or 15 minutes, but he will not take part this weekend,’
‘He went to join up with Wales and the doctors there saw what we had seen ? everybody could see that he was not 100 per cent.
‘They all said he needed maybe one or two weeks to recover.
‘Even if he trains today and feels okay after a couple of sessions, he still has to get his match fitness back.
‘But if everything goes well, we could maybe look at the game next Thursday or West Ham.
‘I know Ashley would like to play a game before Cardiff ? but I will not risk him.’
