Why The 4-5-1 Formation At Home?

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez has spoken recently that they need to put things right at home if we are to succeed this season.

So far this year, we’ve won just 3 of our 8 games at the Liberty, drawing 3 and losing the other two. Together with that poor run of form, our performances have been poor, uninspiring and boring to say the very least. I thought we were lucky to come away with all three points on Tuesday against Hartlepool, and apart from the opening 15 minutes, it wasn’t a performance that warranted a top place in League One.

Thanks to our impressive away form of 6 wins in 9, we’re joint top with Leyton Orient but failure to improve our results and performances at the Liberty, this season, it’ll be play-offs at best for us.

After saying he wanted to prove ourselves at home, I couldn’t understand why Martinez decided to go with a 4-5-1 formation, it doesn’t scream ambition to me. We played with a lazy and slow striker up front and decided to crowd the midfield, hoping our wingers would get forward, though that’s pointless if you have no one in the box to get on the end of their crosses.

Surely the way to improve our home form is to go with an attacking 4-4-2 formation that’s proven effective for us so far, rather than having just the one striker up front – Jason Scotland, who at the moment is lazier than a snoring pig on mogadon.

It’s a concern that Martinez would rather play him, on his own, up front and leave Guillem Bauza, who’s in scoring form lately, and Darryl Duffy, a workhorse for us, on the bench. The Spaniard’s first Jackett-esque mistake?

We also wasted too much time as it took us 71 minutes to get another striker on, plus another 9 after that to get Bauza on for Scotland, and coincidence or not, two minutes later we score, with both substitute strikers being involved before Rangel’s strike.

Early on in the game, it looked as if Martinez had finally got us geared up and we got going from kick-off, something we hadn’t seen at the Liberty since early September. We couldn’t keep the momentum going though and Hartlepool were easily given a route back into the game.

From 8pm onwards, it was another frustrating performance to watch for the 11,000 fans. We couldn’t break down a rather solid Hartlepool defence and we were limited to half chances on goal.

Rather than coming out like a moaning barsteward despite being top of the league, I still think there’s major improvements to be made at home and soon enough we’ll drop down a few places, when the other teams play and if we drop more valuable points at home.

A 4-5-1 formation, with the way we’ve been playing lately, is just asking for a point at home and it was maybe harsh on ‘Pool that they lost on Tuesday night. However, we took all 3 and of course we’d take it, but we need to be far more convincing on home soil and start scoring a lot more goals if we want to finally gain promotion to the Championship.
