Ajax defender Mike van der Hoorn has told Dutch press that he is set to join Swansea City
Ajax defender Mike van der Hoorn has told Dutch press that he is set to join Swansea City – ‘a wonderful club’ – the 23 year-old said.
The Dutchman has been quoted in the Associated Press saying:
‘I’m going to make an appointment to go to England,’
‘It’s a wonderful club.’
Reports first emerged last week about a bid being accepted by Ajax for the 6ft 3′ centre half, and it now looks like the player is set to fly to Swansea next week to complete a permanent move. The fee is only thought to be around £2m.
van der Hoorn made 15 League appearances for Ajax last season – scoring one goal. He is served his country at under-21 level, winning 13 caps. He is capable of playing our preference of playing out from the back and is particularly strong in the air and could add some much needed presence in defending set pieces.
The expected arrival of van der Hoorn – which would be our first signing of the Summer, makes you wonder about the future of Kyle Bartley, who has struggled to earn much game time since he joined from Arsenal four years ago.
Could van der Hoorn be our new fourth choice centre back? Who is he good enough to push further for a first team place? We doubt that, as Jordi Amat has also struggled to earn more first team opportunities despite his performance level when he has played.
