There’s just no end to the ‘speculation’ over Dan James’ future – the window is closed!

|

Ever since his deadline day move to Leeds United fell through at the final hour, there’s been no end of articles about Swansea City winger Dan James’ future.

If you had a quick look on Newsnow earlier this afternoon, click-bait heavy sites haven’t missed an opportunity. The Swansea City news page has been filled and dominated by articles speculating – at best – over his future with some going as far as saying that the winger won’t sign a new contract at Swansea, despite the player himself insisting that he would and that he ‘loves every second here’.

Not only that, but the transfer window is closed. The constant speculation is therefore now pointless.

But no, don’t believe the player himself – read his comments here, believe a Leeds-based journalist who believes that he won’t sign a new deal based on what his agent said.

Others suggest that he’s a Leeds player in waiting but after his FA Cup heroics against Brentford, they’ll have to join the queue in the Summer.

Swansea City’s owners were foolish, to say the very least, to push through his sale at the end of the January transfer window. They were only going to get a loan fee before a sub-£10m fee in the Summer. In the current inflated market, 21-year-olds of James’ quality (should) cost a lot more than that.

He’s still got 18 months left on his current deal but the Swans still need to get him secured under a longer contract on senior terms. That won’t guarantee the player’s future at the Liberty Stadium although it will at least put the club in a better bargaining position when the interest and offers inevitably return in a few months’ time.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay has recently said:

“Angus Kinnear said they are taking a key interest in him still. He is discussing a new contract with Swansea but there doesn’t seem to be much progress in that. And, after a conversation I had with his agent, I’d be a bit surprised if it happened.”

This, to me, simply sounds like a way for his agent to get the absolute best deal for his client. I’m confident that, left to his own devices, James would settle on a new contract at Swansea City. After all, he did say he was keen to sign one here.

Dan James deserves praise for getting back to his day job to great effect. Yes, he did miss one game but that was most likely due to the fact that he missed training on deadline day due to travelling to Leeds for a potential move, two days before a match.  He was back to his best on Sunday with a stunning goal that has been watched worldwide.

It’s been unfair to suggest as well that James is keen to leave the Swans, which some of these clickbait sites have been doing – recently as well as during the January transfer window.

Lets hope it dies off and the clickbait and speculative articles stop but I highly doubt it.
