Swansea City begin the first of three big games this weekend as Championship leaders are the visitors to the Liberty Stadium before we host West Brom on Wednesday night. A trip to Derby – also in the top 6 the following Saturday round up the three games in 8 days.

With Norwich currently top of the pile, we thought we’d take a look at the stats to see how we compare against the League leaders.

One of the biggest criticisms of Graham Potter’s side amongst our own fans has been our lack of finishing and how we waste too many good chances on goal. The passing and possession stats are in favour, we lead the entire division when it comes to passes per game, passing accuracy and average possession but we’re lagging behind in the more important stats such as goals scored, big chances created, shots on target.

Norwich have scored 9 more goals than the Swans, have averaged almost 1 big chance created per game (a big chance is one that is identified as being a chance you’d expect to be scored). Norwich have also had 21 more shots than the Swans this season, although their xG of 25.11 vs ours of 23.35 suggests just how wasteful we are in front of goal compared to some of the teams above us.

The stats also suggest that 1 in 3 shots on target results in a goal for Norwich City, while the Swans average a goal for every 3.26 shots on target.

Defensively, the stats are much better in our favour although they do suggest that we’ve been somewhat lucky so far. We’ve conceded 1.44 big chances per game but yet have only conceded 13 goals this season in 17 games.

Compared to 9.75 shots per goal against Norwich, teams facing the Swans average a goal against them every 14.92 shots.  Teams also need to create more shots on target to score against Potter’s side, averaging a goal conceded for every 4.62 shots on target.

In a nutshell, despite being in mid-table in terms of shots conceded, we’re in the top 2 for goals conceded.
