Swansea City look set to sign Barnsley midfielder Hugo Colace.

The Argentinian was named Barnsley’s Player of the Year last season but he’s a free agent after rejecting a new contract offer at Oakwell.

The 26 year-old and his agent are expected at the Liberty Stadium next week to finalise a deal, and chairman Huw Jenkins says they’ve ‘virtually agreed terms’.

‘Paulo sees him as a strong defensive midfielder who will suit our style of play,’

‘He has proved himself in the Championship with Barnsley and we think he will prove a good acquisition for us.

‘He is a strong midfield player at our level and Paulo is excited at the prospect of bringing that type of player into the club.’

‘We have virtually agreed terms with Hugo,’

‘The player and his agent are coming to Swansea next week to talk through the proposed agreement and hopefully to finalise things.’

Hugo began his English football League career two years ago when he joined Barnsley in 2008. A defensive midfielder, which I’m sure would suit Sousa’s style, made 75 appearances, scoring 7 goals for the Tykes. He has also served his country at Under-17 and Under-20 level.

Colace would be Swansea City’s third signing of the Summer, and the club’s second new midfielder along with Scott Donnelly. Swans fans are still waiting for news on a new striker though following the departure of Lee Trundle plus of course the fact that we struggled in front of goal last season.
