Following Saturday’s heavy 4-0 defeat away at Sheffield United, Swansea City boss Russell Martin was asked during his post-match press conference to explain the reasons behind Luke Williams’ departure.

His assistant was missing for the 3-1 home victory against Bristol City and so rumours had quickly spread that he had already left the club.

Martin confirmed his departure, saying he had left two weeks ago but conversations regarding his future in South Wales had been on-going between the two for the past six weeks or so.

“He left two weeks ago. It’s just taken a bit of time to sort out and announce.

I’m sad about it, Luke’s been brilliant with me for my first couple of seasons as a manager, was really important in terms of the support he’s given me and as a friend.

But we had a few chats over the last 6 weeks, he has a very young family, he’s been away a lot in the last three years at MK so we sat down and had a chat about things and has come down to the decision that feels best for him at the moment.”

Talking about whether or not he’ll be replaced with a new coach coming in, Russ added that it’ll be assessed over the next few weeks to determine whether or not they’ll need to bring someone new in.

“Obviously I’m disappointed to lose him but we have some brilliant backroom staff that I think can fill the gaps.

We’ll assess things over the next few weeks and if we feel there’s still a gap that needs filling then we’ll go and do that with the person that we feel is right for that.”
