By MF from Tottenham news
How has your season so far compared with your hopes back in the Summer? With the money spent and the signings made, was top 4 the target?
Not just top 4, the target was the very top! I personally bought into the ‘We’ve sold Elvis and bought the Beatles’ hype and guessed that under AVB we’d have an even better season than last year when we gathered our records points total for the Premier League. It’s not quite turned out like that. The sunny days of August and September when we were rock solid at the back and sneaking narrow wins amid promises that the goals would flow once everyone got to know each other etc seem a long time ago. The fact that we’re only a few points from a CL spot given some of the results, the number of injuries and the chaos caused by the manager change defies most definitions of logic.
The Swans have struggled to juggle the Europa League with the Premier League this season. Spurs looked to have eased through Europe, but do you think it’s affected your League progress?
No, not at all. We put out strong sides and had an easyish group. We’ve had problems in previous years but normally after Christmas when the games get tougher and longer what with extra time and pens. I personally think the whole thing is a waste of time.
Your thoughts on Andre Villas Boas’ sacking. Was it deserved, should he have gone and was it timed right?
I was surprised and disappointed when he left but reading between the lines you can detect that relations between him and Levy/the board had reached a point where it would’ve been unhealthy to continue. We, the fans, will never be sure what went on behind the scenes but I’m convinced that Levy would’ve had to be properly miffed to bring him to the conclusion that handing AVB his cards was a good idea.
Tim Sherwood has replaced him, is that a decision that has gone down well with the fans? Is he your long-term replacement or do you have someone else in mind to take over?
Sherwood is popular, he’s said all the right things and is doing well, I suspect very few people expect him to be there at the start of next season though. I hope there are hidden depths but at the moment he exudes an engaging naiveté that you fear the ruthless Premier League will uncover sooner rather than later.
How have your performances differed following a change of manager?
Where to start? It’s like a Friday evening compared to a Monday morning. The defence is all over the shop occasionally but trying to score goals is fun! Who knew?
What are your strengths and weaknesses in the team?
Our attack entirely revolves around the currently revitalised Adebayor. He’s been at his best since being brought back into the side, but he always plays well when he feels he’s got a point to prove. Weaknesses? Our 4-4-2 formation leaves us light in midfield. We’ve often been outnumbered, few have been able to take advantage though.
What players should we be aware of in the Spurs team? Are there any of your star assets out injured?
Adebayor as I say, and Eriksen is finding his feet – he’s quality. Townsend is likely to be on the bench. We’ve got injuries galore but Vertonghen is the man we’re missing most.
Our record signing Wilfried Bony has received mixed views from the fans so far. What are your opinions on our striker? Was he worth the £12m spent last Summer?
Erm. Aside from the few minutes he played at White Hart Lane (during which he did nothing) I’ve not seen him in the flesh. The interweb tells me he’s got 13 goals so far, that seems alright to me?
I was a bit surprised to see Defoe was leaving for a move to Canada soon, what are your thoughts on this? Should/Could you have done more to convince him to stay and why do you think has he not been a regular starter over the year?
Defoe’s not big enough, strong enough or quick enough to lead an attack in the Premier League. His biggest asset is coming off the bench to take advantage of a tiring defence, but even that is something he’s managed only once this season. I’d have kept him for his sub appearances and because of the lack of alternatives but he wanted to go and we’re getting good money for a 31 year old.
Who do you think will get relegated this season? Some Swansea fans are worried about the drop, should we be?
No chance. There’s some right load of poo out there, West Ham, Fulham and Sunderland for three. Add in Cardiff and Norwich – you’ll be fine.
Your prediction for the game?
I’m feeling quite optimistic about this one given your recent form and our away record. I’m going for a 3-1 away win.
