Rumours are starting to circulate that Swansea City are close to pulling off a massive coup by snapping up relegated West Ham United’s centre back Matthew Upson.

Upson, 32, is available on a free transfer after failing to agree a new contract with the Hammers and he will be released on July 1st when his current deal expires.

The defender would add the steel needed for the Swans defence as they prepare for Premier League life and would also add the experience wanted after the Marcos Senna deal was ‘priced’ out.

Upson was part off the 23 man England squad for last summer’s Fifa World Cup in South Africa. They were knocked out in the last 16 of the competition, losing 4-1 to Germany, Upson scoring the England goal.

The reports are suggesting that the player has had his medical and will join Swansea City in the coming days. The club have yet to confirm any contact with the centre back but the rumours over the last few days are speeding up on the deal and would catch some people by surprise, with Upson being an established Premier League and England player – earning 21 caps and scoring 2 goals for his nation.

Upson has also been strongly linked with a move to fellow Premiership new-boys Norwich City.

Will he join the Swans? Only time will tell.
