The 20 Premier League clubs spent a combined £665million in 2017’s summer transfer window.
Whilst that figure is net spend, it averages out to £33.25million for each club in the top flight but the total spending figure tops out at a new record of £1.413billion.
The net spend figure comes from total sales reaching £780million.
The net spend is equivalent to 14.73% of total club revenue this season, compared to a percentage figure of 14.35% in 2016/17 and whilst that all sounds nice and good, the true spending figures speak for themselves and weren’t we always told the new television deals wouldn’t inflate transfer spending to ridiculous new levels.
The PremierLeague.com obviously talk about how clubs are committed to supporting local communities and the wider football pyramid in general and it points out that the Premier League (with the backing of clubs) runs the most comprehensive redistribution programme in professional sport and in the remainder of the current campaign, it’s estimated that £443million will be spent in those areas.
But this is about the numbers isn’t it.
