Swansea City’s star player Michu is still waiting to make a long-awaited return from the ankle injury that has kept him sidelined for almost 4 months.

The Spanish midfielder was initially hoping to return for the South Wales derby on February 8th, but he is still suffering with some pain as he looks to build up his match fitness in training.

However, he is finding it difficult to do that at present due to the on-going pains, but Monk remains confident he’ll be back soon:

‘Michu has a little bit of pain he can’t quite get over and you can sometimes get that with injuries ? I’ve had it myself,’

‘You get to a good level but it’s on your mind, that last bit of pain which is enough to affect your training.’

‘Hopefully he will be in contention for the weekend or maybe Napoli away,’

‘His recovery hasn’t been quick and it’s disappointing for him because he’s so close. It’s not because he’s breaking down. Physically he’s at a good level and the injury has healed, it’s just that last little bit of pain.

‘He’s at a good level ? it’s not a question of going back to the start.’

Michu had a painkilling injection on Wednesday and is required to rest for 48 hours.

Monk added:

‘It’s nothing serious, but he needs two days’ complete rest and we can build him up.

He won’t be available [on Thursday], which is disappointing for him and us. He was eager to get out there, but sometimes you can push yourself too much.
