Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie told the Express that his future is still “up in the air” as he waits for the club to appoint a new manager before discussing his future.

The Scottish international has attracted interested from a number of Championship clubs after a successful half-season loan spell at Barnsley where he scored 9 goals in 17 appearances.

McBurnie has only one-year left on his contract at the Liberty Stadium and it’s crunch time in terms of where the striker goes from here. He struggled for game time with the Swans in the Premier League, but he could earn a more regular role now that we’ve been relegated to the Championship. The player may be keen to play for his hometown club Leeds United or the club he supports – Rangers – who have both been linked with a move for the frontman.

Other rumours suggest that Swansea City are not interested in losing the striker this Summer, and a new contract could be offered to the 21-year-old (22 on Monday).

Talking about Rangers and Steven Gerrard’s move to the club, McBurnie said:

“He is a legend in the game with what he has done for Liverpool and he has had a great career,”

“As a Rangers fan I hope he goes there and he turns it around and does fantastically well.”

“Whether that has anything to do with me or not, who knows?

“But as a Rangers fan I would love to see him go there and do unbelievably well.

“Me and my brother grew up as massive Rangers fans. I don’t think we had any choice.

McBurnie appears to be open to different moves this Summer, but you can’t yet rule out him staying here next season, especially if expected new manager Graham Potter is keen for him to play a key role in the 2018/19 campaign.

He will surely demand first-team football and will most certainly go elsewhere in search of that if he’s not guaranteed that here. Whilst he may still be raw, he most definitely has an eye for goal and adapted impressively at a struggling Championship side like Barnsley in January, scoring in only his second appearance for the club.

McBurnie said he could end up ‘anywhere’:

“But I am still contracted to Swansea, I have another year left and I need to get back and see what is happening.

“I will speak to Swansea when I come back from this trip, see what they want to do and what we want to do and take it from there.

“It is a bit up in the air at the minute. I don’t think the club can let people go or bring people in without a manager being there.

“It is a waiting game, there is no rush. It is the uncertainty of football.

“It is exciting in a way but also its nervy. I could end up at Swansea, I could end up anywhere in the world but it is exciting.”

Graham Potter’s arrival as our new head coach is expected by early next week and the Swans can then finally push through their Summer transfer plans. A number of players’ futures need to be sorted, as well as then assessing the squad and determining what types of players and in what positions need to be brought in over the next couple of months.
