Roberto Martinez has been linked with another Premiership job, this time it’s Wigan Athletic.
Talk Sport reported this yesterday, and I was relunctant to post news of the ‘story’ as it lacks any substance really. As it stands, Bruce is still Wigan boss and there’s no speculation that the club have Martinez in their sights.
|“It’s inevitable RM will be linked with Wigan, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it just yet.”|
However, Steve Bruce looks set to takeover at Sunderland, and it seems that the radio show has picked Martinez among a number of other candidates to take over at the JJB Stadium because it’s his former club.
UPDATE – Sky Sports News report that Steve Bruce will not be having talks with Sunderland, so we can forget the whole thing now really.
The press can easily link the Spaniard to a job, he’s been linked with the manager’s job at Portsmouth and Newcastle in the past, and the Bookies then start to offer odds.
It’s highly unlikely that Roberto Martinez would go back on his word either. His loyalty to Swansea City seems 100% genuine and he said when he first arrived as manager that he’d only leave if he was forced to.
I don’t suggest that he’ll be here forever, I doubt the board will ever force him out, but if he continues to deliver success like he is, it’s only a matter of time before bigger clubs make a serious bid to sign him up as their new boss.
The young manager impressed instantly, winning the League One title on a very limited budget in his first season and continuing that success in the Championship with a very respectable 8th position this season.
He has aims of taking us to the Premiership and I believe that he wants to finish what he’s started here – building a squad to take us to the top flight for the first time since 1981.
