Spanish sports newspaper AS is reporting that La Liga outfit C.D Leganes have shown an interest in signing Swansea City striker Borja Baston.

Leganes, who just about avoided relegation last season, are interested in Baston but only if both the player and the Swans lower their demands – according to as.com.

It is not known exactly whether the transfer would be a loan or a permanent move, but they do mention Borja’s loan move to fellow La Liga side Malaga, who paid “a good part” of his salary during his season-long stay last year.

Borja Baston signed for Swansea City in 2016 from Atletico Madrid for a then club-record fee of £15.5m, but he struggled to repeat that goalscoring form at Eibar the season before when he netted 18 goals in 36 La Liga appearances.

The 25-year-old has featured just 18 times since his move to the Liberty Stadium scoring only once. He struggled to earn a starting place and was often not even included on the bench by former head coach Paul Clement. Last season he was loaned out to Malaga, but he couldn’t impress there either, scoring just twice in 20 appearances.

It’s possible that he could head back out on loan yet again with the Swans then hoping that he gets back to his former goalscoring ways to earn a permanent move.

Currently, the Swans won’t be able to recoup anything close to the £15.5m that we paid for him two years ago, and only a similar season to the one at Eibar will give us the opportunity to do that. It’s a tough ask given his recent form, but it appears that he won’t be in our Championship plans next season. If Borja suffers another poor season, the Swans will finally have to cut their losses and accept a heavy loss on the striker.

It wasn’t only at Eibar on loan in 2015/16 where he scored consistently over a season, however. He also impressed at Zaragoza the season before, scoring 22 goals in 38 games. The year before that he netted a decent 10 in 34 at Deportivo La Coruna so the potential was there prior to his move to South Wales.

Borja is jetting off somewhere according to his Instagram. Simply travelling or possibly looking to complete a move? Who knows…
