Chariman Huw Jenkins has challenged the Swansea City squad to emulate the club’s greatest ever FA Cup run by making it to the last four of the competition.
The Swans made it to the semi-final stage in 1964, and are in a rich vein of form going into Saturday’s fifth round tie at home to Fulham.
A win would put the Swans into the quarter-finals and in with a shout of emulating Cardiff’s cup heroics from last season.
And whilst Jenkins appreciates that the league is the number one priority, he also believes the players should take advantage of the cup opportunity they have created for themselves.
‘Much of our focus is on the Championship this season, but we should not lose sight of the FA Cup at all,’ Jenkins told the Evening Post.
‘It’s a very important game against Fulham because we have a wonderful chance to progress to the quarter-finals.’
‘When you look at our history as a club, we all talk about the run to the semi-finals in 1964.’
‘I’m not old enough to have been there but my dad was and I think it would be a fantastic achievement if we could recreate that.’
‘Roberto and the players have got an opportunity to form their own piece of history this weekend.’
‘We are playing well enough to think of getting to the semi-finals if the draw is kind and I’d be more interested in doing that than a big payday,’ he added.
‘If we keep our standards up, we have got a hell of a chance of getting to the last four if the draw is right.’
‘These opportunities do not come around too often and I know Roberto and the players will want to take advantage.’
‘The opportunity may even be there to do what Cardiff did last year and reach the final.’
‘They did well to beat Middlesbrough, but after that they had a couple of winnable ties against teams like Barnsley and the same could happen to us.’
Before the club can even dream of making it to the last four and beyond, they have to see off a decent Fulham side on Saturday afternoon.
