Chairman Huw Jenkins says he’s narrowed his options down further to 6 as he looks to appoint a new manager.

He wasn’t willing to name the 6, but Gary Speed is set to have talks along with Aidy Boothroyd. Gus Poyet has also been strongly linked recently and the Evening Post report that the former Tottenham assistant manager has also had talks.

The newspaper also report that Carlton Palmer has emerged as a ‘shock contender’ for the job but surely he is an outsider with names like Gary Speed and Gus Poyet being linked.

The first mention of Palmer being linked to the vacant job was on BBC’s 606 message board yesterday, posted up as a rumour.

Palmer’s management career began in 2001 when he was appointed as Stockport’s player-manager in 2001. He was sacked 2 years later after a poor start to the season. He then took over at Mansfield Town but later resigned after the Stags fell into the League 2 relegation zone.

Jenkins told BBC Sport:

“We are down to about six main people.”

“I know in my mind who we’re looking at but I’m not going to give names,”

“Hopefully it will push on between now and the weekend,”
