After scoring 4 goals in pre-season, Mark Gower is aiming to get 10 this season in the Championship.
The winger struggled to net a single goal last season which he admitted affected his performances. But a hatrick on Saturday against Kilmarnock and his first goal against Palamos has given him a huge boost in confidence.
In the 2007/2008 season with Southend United, he scored 9 goals and he was hoping to get a similar amount the following year after joining the Swans on a free transfer.
After ditching the ‘cursed’ number 11 shirt and the arrival of new manager Paulo Sousa, Mark Gower has a fresh start with the Swans and he’s confident he can meet his own target of 10 goals this season, he told the Evening Post:
‘I have waited a long time to score at the Liberty,’
‘It was nice to get a few ? the more the merrier ? and, hopefully, they will keep on coming now and I can make up for some lost time. The manager said to me when I came off that I needed to save a few for the Championship season, but these goals can’t do me any harm.
‘It’s a massive confidence-booster for me and, hopefully, I can go on and get my share of goals this season. I scored 10 the last time I was in the Championship with Southend and I always start the season thinking I will be satisfied if I can reach double figures.’
‘Confidence is big thing,’
‘Things just kept happening last season ? I hit the post, they were disallowed, keepers pulled off save after save.
‘In the end I was just trying too hard. I was trying to knock the leather off the ball when I got a chance.
‘I have had time to think about it over the summer and I’ve tried to be more relaxed. I’m trying to place the ball now and it’s working.
‘I got a bit anxious after not getting an early goal last year and I was too eager to impress. He told me the goals would come and I feel more relaxed.’
Mark Gower is also in the running to be the club’s new penalty taker following the departure of Jason Scotland. Pintado has missed a few lately and after scoring from the spot on Saturday, he could take over as our new spot-kick taker:
‘If a big centre-forward signs for the club in the next week and says he wants them I’m not going to argue with him,’ he said. ‘But at the moment I would like to think it could be me.
‘I said to the captain before the game (on Saturday) that I would like to do it and I scored one, so as it stands I think I am taking them.’
