Joshua Clark writes his first article for Vital Swansea, and talks about some of the best games this season.
Although there is no official award for the best game of the season so far, I have come up with a shortlist of a few possible nominations of what I think were the most exhilarating, thrilling and exiting games of the season so far.
The first nomination is the game at home to Horsham in which we eventually won 6-2, some may think this is an unusual choice, but I was at the game and found it to be exciting, surprising and enthralling, especially to see the different footballing contrasts between the two different clubs.
A neutral supporter would have found this match truly compelling as a potential upset could have been on the cards, although it pains me to say it.
The first shock of the game came after 20 minutes when the great British Olympic deaf team striker Lee Farrell scored by lobbing Dorus DeVries to dent the confidence of the Swansea team. The lead didn`t last long though, Darren Pratley equalised after just one minute. Lee Farrell again embarrassed the Swansea keeper by capitalising on a mistake made by the Dutchman. Two one down and facing an embarrassing cup exit, Swansea weren`t even phased by this thought as Leon Britton, Jason Scotland and Ferrie Bodde all found the back of the net to give the team a 4-2 lead going into the break.
An early second half strike by Andy Robinson was enough to ensure there would only be one outcome to the match, on loan striker Warren Feeney saw Swansea through to the third round.
My next nomination is when we played Doncaster on January 24th 2008. The result was a hammering 4-0 victory to us in an enthralling game at Belle View.
The win put us 11 points clear at the top of the league at the time and showed the rest of league one just what we are capable, by beating a side by a large margin that was then 4th placed.
Ferrie Bodde fired us into the lead on 28 minutes through a sublime free kick. The midfielder, dubbed ‘the Dutch Roy Keane` then picked out a superb, pinpoint cross-field pass to Jason Scotland, who`s low cross picked out fellow striker Guillem Bauza Mayol for a simple tap in on 52 minutes.
The action didn`t stop there however. Six minutes later Stephen Roberts was shown a red card after conceding a penalty after being adjudged to haul down Bauza in the box, Scotland converted from the penalty spot.
Martinez then made a change late on, bringing on on-loan Manchester United striker Febian Brandy, this decision proving to be worthwhile as he netted late on to seal the fate of Doncaster and round off the scoring for rampant Swansea city.
My final nomination is, of course, the Leeds match at home. I hope all of you will agree with this nomination. In a match marred with riots and arrests Swansea walked out 3-2 winners on a day all Swansea fans will remember.
Reverberations were heard all around the buzzing liberty stadium on a glorious Saturday afternoon. As a packed to the rafters liberty hosted its biggest crowd of the season (19,010).
The match meanwhile, echoed the atmosphere. Andy Robinson`s stunning 30-yard free kick sent the whole ground into ecstasy. 1-0 Swansea. On twelve minutes gone Jermain Beckford equalised superbly for Leeds, after capitalising on Dennis Lawrence`s Indecision. 1-1.
A rare goal from club captain Gary Monk restored the lead for the home side with a near post header on 23 minutes. 2-1 swans. Tensions grew on the pitch and eventually spilled over as Swansea was reduced to 10 men, Ferrie Bodde sent off for a rash challenge on Jonathan Howson after 38 minutes.
Just before half time an amazing run from Jason Scotland gave the swans a two-goal cushion to cling on to. 3-1 swans. Alan Thompson`s second half free kick not enough to salvage anything for a diminished Leeds side. It was a sixth successive home win for the swans, final score 3-2.
