Former Manchester United and Danish legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel says it’s ‘exciting times’ for Swansea City, as he believes the club is a ‘good fit’ for his fellow countryman Michael Laudrup.

Schmeichel revealed to the Evening Post following a visit to the club’s training ground that the Swansea boss phoned him just before his first meeting with his new employers.

One of the games best ever goalkeepers said he thought the Swans offered a good foundation to offer Laudrup his first management role in English football:

‘Michael phoned me when he was on the way to his first meeting with Swansea,’

‘I felt it would be a good partnership. The way Swansea played last season and the way they conducted themselves in the Premier League was very impressive.

‘Not a lot of clubs get promoted and then play that well.

‘A lot of clubs come up, stay tight and try to survive game by game.

‘But many, many times Swansea took the game to their opponents, especially at the Liberty Stadium.

‘I think at home they only lost four games, which as a promoted team is very impressive.

‘For Michael there was a really good foundation here for him to come and add his qualities.

Schmeichel also believes that the Swansea City players will benefit from working with one of the best ever players, he added:

‘Michael is one the best players who ever lived in this world,’ Schmeichel adds.

‘I played a huge number of games with him, and the vision he has ? he will inject that into his players here and they will feed off that.

‘And for Michael, Swansea gives him a really good introduction to English football.

‘There probably would have been a lot of opportunities for him in English football because he is so well-known and well-respected around the world.

‘But there are certain clubs who would not have been good for him. Swansea is a good fit for him.’

And with the likes of Michu in the side, it’s exciting times for the Swans:

‘Swansea have done really well, You can see things have gone really quickly if you compare them to other Premier League clubs.

‘They would normally have their own training ground and different facilities, and I know that’s all going to happen in the next year or two for Swansea.

‘I look at the players who have been brought in this season, and this is probably something you would not have dreamed of even just a year ago.

‘Look at players like Michu, with six league goals already ? these are exciting times for Swansea.

‘I am pleased for Michael that he is part of it and I am pleased for the football club.’
