You could probably pick out five or six of our earlier games this season, total up all of our chances and it still wouldn’t have matched the number that we created against Ipswich today, but somehow we still lost the game 3-2 after wasting a host of excellent goalscoring opportunities.
Expected goals or ‘xG’ might not be your thing, but we registered a score of 3.45 today – which is simply a measure of how many goals you’d expect to score given the chances created. We wasted a host of them but the positives we there as at least we were creating more clear-cut opportunities from excellent positions.
Graham Potter has kept us all guessing this season about his starting eleven selections and he sprung another surprise on Tuesday night when he switched his goalkeepers up for the trip to Wigan Athletic. Nordfeldt produced a not-so-convincing display at the DW Stadium and many fans wanted to see the return of Erwin Mulder for today’s visit of Ipswich, but our manager stuck with Nordfeldt and it might have cost us a point or all three.
Ipswich’s goals all came against the run of play, which is to be expected really when we dominated with over 700 passes and 76% possession. But fair play to the bottom side, they took our chances and we failed to take ours.
Nordfeldt definitely didn’t look convincing today. He did make a great save at Wigan but surely he could have done better with at least one of Ipswich’s goals today? Just check out their winner and late third goal below, “chocolate wrists” one fan commented, I couldn’t have put it better myself.

The ball wasn’t even moving that quickly and surely he should be able to push that ball out and away from the goal to safety?
The second goal also saw the Swede get a weak hand to a shot but the third one for me looked the worst and the easiest for the goalkeeper to keep out.
Graham Potter has got everything right this season. His team selections and constant switch-up of tactics and formations and paid off more often than not, but his decision to bring back Nordfeldt after faultless displays from Mulder will definitely be questioned.
Many people complained about Nordfelt over Mulder prior to kick off and in the end they were right to do so. The only major mistake Potter has made so far though to be fair though.
